Swindon Borough Council – energy efficiency case study

The Link Centre – Swindon

In conjunction with Swindon Borough Council’s environmental initiatives including participation in the UK wide Local Authority Carbon Management Plan, Capita Symonds Energy’s role is to assess the electricity usage across all of the Council’s offices, Civic Campus and Link Centre.  The Link Centre is a large council run leisure complex, comprising an international sized ice skating rink, swimming pool, indoor courts, climbing walls, fitness studio and the local library. The site operates seven days a week for 51 weeks per year. The Link Centre was in the top 5 highest users of electricity in the Council’s extensive portfolio with annual consumption of approximately 4.2 million kWh. The implementation of voltage optimisation using the enviro-Volt R Series has reduced annual energy consumption by an impressive 15% with a consequential reduction in CO2 emissions of over 347 Tonnes annually. Taking into account both the direct and indirect savings afforded by the scheme, the R Series achieved an annual saving of over £76,000 and an impressive return on investment. R Series units have now been installed at several locations within the council’s control. Bruce Stone – Associate Director, Building Services Swindon Capita Partnership
